PM Competence

Competence = Skills + Experience

So you’ve got the process for successful project management right (step 1), you’ve found the right tools and templates to help you follow the process (step 2).  Now you need project management competence to follow the process and use the tools.  This is step 3. You might now need to get some project management knowledge, recruit some project managers, or train yourself or your colleagues in how to do project management better.

Here we’ve attempted to gather some of the web key resources to get you on the way.  If you’d like to suggest additions do drop us a line.

PM Knowledge

Project Managers in any organisation build a large knowledge base, either informally or formally.  Where it is more formal there is often a PMO to help share best practice. Often we are asked where should a PM in a smaller organisation turn.  If you are in that situation take a look at PM Answers.

PM Recruitment

There are many pitfalls when recruiting project managers. ProjExc can support you in the journey of defining, recruiting, and onboarding PM talent. Take a look at the PM Careers page in PM Resources for some of the amazing specialist PM recruiters we’ve come across.

PM Discipline

When you have the people who can use the techniques, a layer of discipline or governance will ensure that the attitudes and behaviours of the team are layered on to to ensure project success. This is even more important where you have more than one project (a portfolio) running concurrently. This article talks more about this and getting an early warning system in place for problems.
